Well, the 283 was going to need to be replaced. It was smoking pretty bad and running pretty rich. After a major tune up, including all of the ignition pieces and a new carb, it wasn't running any better. In fact the engine wasn't being supplied with enough fuel at about 1000-1200 rpm's. A new Fuel Pump didn't help and I questioned the cam and heads/valves, I figured it was just best to take a "Rebuilt” 307ci I had inquired and do a swap. I went through the Engine and replaced all the gaskets and made all the appropriate “front sump changes” that are required for a 1st or 2nd generation ChevyII cars. The change over requires a different oil pan, oil pump, oil pump drive shaft, dipstick and to plug the blocks old dipstick hole. The compression was between 120 and 140 per cylinder, but internally the engine looked good. So I decided to embark in what I called “Project Grenade”.

PROJECT GRENADE !!!!!

As luck has it the 1 day I decide to do the swap, the sky opened up and it rained.

An "EZup" helped to make the best of the rain.

After 5 or 6 hours (2 of the hours were spent just on the 5 engine to Trans bolts, as it is a very tight squeeze) the tired 283 was plucked out. It would have been A LOT QUICKER to just pull the 2 speed Powerglide with it, but I didn’t feel like making a transmission fluid mess.

Here is the poor little 283, I'll push it in the garage and take a better look at it later. On quick inspection, 3 of the exhaust ports were "wet" with oil. Those little power pack (3884520) heads will definitely need a valve job !!!

Another pic of the "new" engine in. It might look pretty, but functionality will hopefully be the end result of "Project Grenade". Without any exhaust hooked up, the timing was set once the fuel made it's way up to the carb....
IT'S ALIVE !!
As an update, after a couple years of running, the engine has done quite well.
